Construction is underway to widen Highway 3 in Belfair
Get ready for reduced congestion, new sidewalks and a wider highway in Belfair.
Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation started construction about two weeks ago to extend the center turn lane on a 1.7-mile segment between Ridgepoint Boulevard and Sweetwater Creek on state Route 3 in Belfair, according to a press release.
“This project will benefit more than people behind the wheel,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Michele Britton in the release. “We’re also creating wider shoulders and adding about a mile of sidewalks.”
During construction, drivers may encounter shoulder closures, traffic shifts, weeknight lane closures, flagging and delays between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The construction work will help increase mobility and reduce the potential for collisions for people traveling through the Belfair corridor. Crews will also construct retention ponds to help filter stormwater, improving water quality.
The work is expected to be complete by fall 2016.
The widening work required extensive relocation of utility lines. Crews relocated infrastructure belonging to several utilities at various locations along the project corridor, according to the release. Relocating most of those utilities was necessary before starting the highway project. The remaining utility relocations are expected to be complete by the end of this summer.
