Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash in Port Orchard on Tuesday
A man died in a motorcycle crash near Port Orchard on Tuesday.
The man, identified by the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office as Ernest Gilbert Mejia, age 78, of South Kitsap, reportedly died at the scene of the accident.
The accident reportedly occurred around 3 p.m. in the 1600 block of Southwest Old Clifton Road near Port Orchard, between Lieseke Lane Southwest and Southwest Berry Lake Road.
Mejia was reportedly driving a 2007 Kawasaki VN900 motorcycle.
No other vehicles or people were reportedly involved.
A press release from the sheriff’s office describes what happened:
Deputies responded to reports of a single motorcycle crash; the condition of the driver was unknown. After arriving at the scene, deputies found the motorcycle laying on its side in the roadway, significantly damaged.
Mejia was located in an adjacent drainage ditch.
Medical responders attempted emergency care, but determined their efforts were unsuccessful. Mejia was pronounced dead.
It’s reportedly not yet known if impairment was a factor in the crash, or if Mejia experienced a medical emergency at the time of the crash. Deputies are still investigating the cause of the crash.
Mejia was wearing a motorcycle safety helmet.
The county’s forensic pathologist will conduct an autopsy, and the Kitsap County Coroner will make
a determination as to cause and manner of death.
An analysis of the crash scene indicated Mejia was driving westbound on Old Clifton Road and failed to negotiate a curve to the left. He lost control of the motorcycle, and it careened off the pavement, onto the shoulder and onto the embankment. It continued its momentum, then tumbled, ejecting Mejia.
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Deputy Steve Martin at 360-337-4634. Reference case report K16-007941.
